Hatha Yoga  in Gosberton

It is believed Yoga traces back to 2500B.C from the Indus civilisation and it is a rich, intense tradition described and interpreted differently by many scholars. The scriptures of the, Vedas, Upanishads, the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali and Tantra describe yoga's development, exploring the mind, body and breath. Hatha Yoga was first defined sometime between the 13th/15th century by Yogi Swatamarama in a scripture called, The Hatha Yoga Pridipika. Pridipika means light or illuminate, Ha means sun, tha means moon, yoga means join, so the translation would be light on how to join the sun and moon. It is said through yoga these two energies within us all, the cool moon, ida being female and the hot sun, pingala being male, can unite along our central channel and encouraged by our breathing can move energy upward allowing an experience a higher consciousness.

During a Hatha yoga class we aim to unify the mind, body and our breath, pranayama. We practice breathing techniques, asana or poses to help bring about calm and peacefulness to the mind and body in preparation for meditation or relaxation, savasana. A Hatha class is of a slow pace, taking time to find correct alignment, feeling the poses and connecting the mind and breath to them. Mudras, hand gestures, and mantras, a word, sound or verse, can be used to further intensify the practice to increase it's benefits. With regular practice Hatha Yoga can help improve our stress management, emotional health, anxiety levels, symptoms of depression, sleep patterns, symptoms of menopause, cognitive function, balance and posture, as well as improving strength, flexibility and mobility.

This ancient, age old practice supports and heals the physical and emotional body in our modern world. The combination of mindfulness and physical movement enables us to de-stress, which has a positive impact on our total health.
